• I expect it to be typed and double-spaced.

You will want to Google the lyrics and listen to the melodies to locate the right song to use for your video.

You can, but this may be distracting.  If you are using a song with lyrics, I suggest using narration at the beginning and end of the movie.

• What type of music can I use?

I believe only mp4s will not work.  Other songs can be brought in and converted to digital format.  You can create music through PhotoStory.

• Do I have to use PhotoStory?

No.  You can also use Windows MovieMaker.  Both are available on the school computers.  PhotoStory is easier, but MovieMaker offers more options.

• Do I have to narrate exactly what is written on the slide?

No.  In fact, I encourage you not to narrate word by word what is written.  Narration is most effective in cases where no text is on the slide–just an image.

• What should I have completed by the end of the first week?

By Friday you should have the first five to six tasks finished on your list in the packet.  Please check them off as you complete them.

This video uses pathos beautifully, but offers no facts and establishes no credibility.  There is little suggestion about what a students can do to help.  But again, a beautiful example of strong pathos.

This video has both pathos and logos, but no ethos.  It does, however, give an example of one specific action that can be done by students to make a difference.

This one is interesting because it includes interviews with students.

You should begin by looking for images to brainstorm.  When you get 10-15 images, begin your storyboard, taking facts and persuasive arguments from your group paper.  Plan them accordingly.

• Why should I storyboard?

Storyboarding is the TEL-Con of a visual essay.  It organizes your thoughts.  It is obvious when students do not storyboard because their movies are unorganized and are not cohesive.

• What should my first slide and last slides be?

Your first and last slides should be black images between 3-5 seconds long to ease into and out of the movie.

• Where do I get a black image?

Save the following image by right clicking and saving it to your image folder.

• Where does my title slide go?

The title should go between the black image and the first slide of the movie.  You may use another black image with text or you may use text over an image.  I recommend not narrating over black images and title slides.

• What about Works Cited?

The works cited goes right before the final black slide.  It will be text only.

• Where does my name go?

You should add Created by or Directed by with your first name and last initial after the Works Cited and before the final black slide.  DO NOT include both your first and last name.

• How do I use Photostory?

Good question.  Please read these directions.

• Will I have to work on this at home?

You might, but you shouldn’t have to.  I am giving you a total of 10 class periods in the computer labs to finish this project.  You should be able to finish it with time to spare.  However, if you want or need to work on it at home, I suggest using a flash drive to save your work rather than saving it to the H: drive.

• When are the due dates?

The your rendered project is due into the M: drop box on Friday, 30 May.  You will present the movie during your assigned final examination period.

• Do you have any good examples for me to view?

Yes.  They are in a seperate post.

• What does it mean to include ethos, pathos, and logos in my visual essay?

Your visual essay presents the facts of a situation (the logos) and persuades Maine East students to do something specific about it (present 1 specific thing students can do from your group paper.)  Pathos will come from the images and music you select.  Ethos will come from statements from leading authorities and organizations.

Your paper is to follow MLA format.  It is to have a correctly formatted parenthetical citations and a  Works Cited Page.  Of course, almost all your sources are from electronic media.  Make sure you also correctly include the YouTube videos if you are referencing them in your papers.

Again, let me restate that the paper is due on Friday, 16 May by the end of your class period.  You have class time this week to work on it, but you should also be spending time outside of class.  I strongly suggest going to the Writing Tutors in 200F, Coach before or after school, and you may also make appointments with me after school (your whole team must be present to make an appointment with me).  If you are waiting until Friday to take this to another person to edit, you are waiting too long.

Let me remind you that this is NOT a five paragraph essay.  I expect more from you at this point. 

You may ask, “What am I supposed to do with a rebuttal?”  First, find out what a rebuttal is.  When you come to this section of the paper, you have already established the background information, the human rights articles that are being violated, and why Maine East students should be concerned.  There will always be one or two students who have a counterargument that one person, especially a teenager, cannot make a difference.  Your rebuttal is two-fold:  first, you must address the counter-argument; second, give the rebuttal by describing specific ways that a teenager at Maine East can make a difference.  In my paper about Darfur, it may look like the following:

Although over a million people have died in Darfur, there may be student in the cafeteria, library, or classroom, who does not believe she can make a difference.  How wrong she is!  Every single student at Maine East High School can and should save a life.  There are several options to employ in taking action to end the genocide in Darfur:  sign a petition to request President Bush and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon take immediate action to end the genocide, lobby members of Congress who score below a “B” according to http://www.darfurscores.org/, and call 1-800-GENOCIDE to demand that human rights be protected in Darfur.

When describing ways to make a difference–be realistic & be specific.  You know what your peers are willing to do.  Each should have its own paragraph about how to do it and how it will make a difference.

• What did you find surprising about the information introduced in this book?
• Is your lasting impression of They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky one of hope or of despair?  Will anything change in the world?
